Pros

Great scientists: smart, helpful and collaborative Great benefits: excellent 401K and vacation time, as well as a solid starting salary

Cons

Recent uncertainty: a layoff in drug discovery in 2012 lead to massive rehiring. Since 2013, there were almost monthly reorganizations/title/department changes within drug discovery. After a banner year in 2014, employees were told to tighten their spending habits for changes ahead. This lead to another round of massive layoffs in 2015. The uncertainties regarding what was going to happen dropped productivity of everyone and lead to a lot of useless fear and speculation. After the layoff, there has been much confusion as to how the company will restructure itself. The layoff of personnel, although not random, was more arbitrary than not.

Pros

I enjoyed working with all of my research colleagues. They were great scientists who worked well together. Biogen does not have the pressure cooker philosophy that other research companies have. Benefits are awesome! Summer hours on Friday, free bonus week off for December. No punching the clock, just get the work done.

Cons

Discoveries from the research group are not high priority for the organization. In fact, most assets are discontinued due to the reflexive nature of senior management. During my time at Biogen, I worked on oncology, immunology, and neurology projects. The first two fell out of fad with management during my tenure so all of my work was shelved or sold off. If you look at Biogen's pipeline and products, very few were entirely discovered in house. Promotions are VERY slow at Biogen.

Pros

Good science in research with state of art equipment. Nice fringe benefits such as socials, company events & stocks; Awesome health insurance options. Nice buildings.

Cons

Constant restructuring and small layoffs every 2-3 years. Company is run like large pharma and not a biotechnology company. Politics within groups, managers promote personal favorites. Lack of work-life balance.
