Great work/life balance in Budapest, legacy-heavy tech environment

Pros

• Work/life balance in Budapest is significantly better than in NYC or London. The pace is more predictable and generally manageable. • Compensation and benefits are truly top-tier on the Hungarian market. Hard to beat locally. • Stable environment, strong global brand, financially very solid company.

Cons

• Budapest is not a real decision-making center. Most meaningful strategic or product decisions are made in NYC or London. Local teams are often in execution mode. • Innovation is uneven. Truly greenfield or high-impact initiatives are rare outside HQ. • The technology landscape is heavily constrained by legacy internal platforms, frameworks, and governance. Even when modern concepts (microservices, cloud, etc.) are mentioned, in practice engineers often work within rigid internal ecosystems. • Starting something new can be extremely bureaucratic. The number of approvals, architectural reviews, and internal dependencies can be frustrating and slow. • Career growth in modern tech domains (cloud-native, cutting-edge architecture) can be limited depending on the team. Exposure is not guaranteed. • Internal politics can be strong in certain areas. Leadership quality varies significantly by team. • Social culture exists, but compared to HQ offices it feels more structured and less organic.

Culture

Pros

Brilliant CEO. The company's overall culture is great. People are mostly pleasant, and the work environment is invigorating, but this really largely depends on which organization you are in.

Cons

1. Career ascension, despite what the official statement says, is extremely difficult to obtain. The criteria for the corporate title exist, but the language is written in a way that conveys maximum ambiguity with no actual road map. 2. If you are a middle manager and in the US, especially, be prepared that your position will be made redundant in the annual purge. 3. My organization has gone through major re-org every year (occasionally twice/year) for the last 5 years. 4. Massive cultural shift over the last 2-3 years. Speaking from only my experience under my organization, we did away with the sensible approach and embraced a more hawkish rhetoric. We were denounced and criticized for being "too nice" in the past, openly, multiple times in the all-hands meetings. 5. My 1:1 meetings regularly start with my manager asking, "Tell me what you can do for ME?" and voicing your opinions/comments in the meeting is discouraged with the post-meeting reminder that they are "inappropriate for the context" or "timing is not right".
