Pros

Great co-workers, inclusive environment, perks like snacks and beverages. Great insurance. Location is easy to get to, company is progressive socially. If you look down on any gender, race, sexuality, etc this is not the place for you. You get to help small businesses and craft people and such earn a living or make extra bucks on their hobby. Very satisfying.

Cons

St Louis has become the center for Support but is increasingly becoming excluded from the rest of the company. Very little room for advancement and recent available promotions were not posted anywhere (we found out spots were open when being told who the new leads are). Recent shake up of the schedule, and plans to do so every six months, means this is no longer a stable work environment. If you don't mind having your schedule changed without regard of extracurricular needs (such as family, volunteer work, etc) this won't be a factor for you. An increasing number of staff are now looking for a new job. Measurements for the job seem arbitrary and little to no guidance is given on how to achieve positive change.

Pros

Compensation, Benefits, Location, Low processing fees for merchants.

Cons

As a former support representative, the experience in the role was much different than what was initially communicated during the interview process. Talking to merchants was not the issue, in fact I quite enjoyed the conversations here and there with those who genuinely needed help with their business. I had hoped to find more willingness to work as a team, better organization, and more diversity and structure within the company, instead there are immature self centered employees who tend to run trainings and leads who applaud like mindedness of an office culture that thrives on "OMG's!" and ego boosts every other hour. There is a real world out there where people work hard for a living, those who complain about "how come breakfast hasn't arrived at the office?" should perhaps focus more on their actual job than what perks they can take advantage of next.

Pros

Good Benefits Package (Insurance, perks, etc) Solid Pay Fully Remote

Cons

I think it's really important to sit and consider before you join this company if you admire/respect a company like this. In 2025 they laid off over 10% of their workforce, less than a year later they laid off another 40%. Prior to that they had garnered a reputation for annual layoffs. When I worked there there was about 3 re-orgs per year, as leadership constantly re-evaluated priorities. Does this sound like a forward thinking well run company in your opinion? Jack Dorsey made public comments around these layoffs and I would suggest you google and read them and ask yourself if this seems like a good, compassionate leader. They had 14.5k employees in 2022 and now they have less than 6k. Look at their stock performance over their history, they are trading at the same price they were in 2018. That is 8 years without any forward momentum. I would suggest you compare that performance against any of their peer companies and see how that varies. About 25% of my compensation was in stock, so that is an important factor to consider. The only thing of note they did stock wise during this time was change their ticker from SQ (reflecting Square) to XYZ (reflecting Block I guess?) cool, that seems like an important focus item. During my time they discontinued their internal employee survey in favor of whatever individual teams wanted to use. Does that sound like the type of company who values employee opinions? They have a pretty lackluster organization of internal docs and when I was there I stumbled on the SOP for them managing out/letting go of staff. They don't have an official PIP program, so this was mostly left up to managers and they had a process of manufacturing criticisms of employees and it was encouraged to do this publicly in slack forums. It would be quite awkward to watch a co-worker get roasted publicly for weeks until they finally were let go. There are pockets of good teams and leaders, but I think you really need to ask yourself before you join if this is a risk you are willing to chance? While they overall have good benefits, their 401k was lackluster at only $5k of matching funds per year and people using parental leave benefits or their unlimited PTO were scrutinized. My offer was really impressive on paper and I was really proud when I landed this job, but as I look back on my experience, this was my least favorite position of my working life. I honestly preferred my job moving furniture in college to this, because of the overall atmosphere and culture. When you're working from home at a place like this, it can be really hard to escape mentally from a toxic work situation. You are always at home with it and it can really turn whatever part of your home you work into a place you don't enjoy spending time. Obviously whether you choose to work at Block is your own decision, but if I knew you personally, I would heavily advise you against.
