Pros

Used to be job stability, and work life balance. Now neither is a guarantee. Now some orgs are PIP'ing like Amazon without the hazard pay for it.

Cons

- Low pay compared to companies of similar size - You may encounter management *and* "senior" engineers that haven't coded or shipped more than a couple features in 20+ years - Company handrolls everything, choosing to build worse or broken versions of open source tools out of ego instead of business calculations. - Overengineered slop and legacy services abound, many many years past when anyone would expect them to, and adoption of new SOTA tech is delayed 3+ years minimum. - Firm has way too many teams and reorgs for tiny volumes of work, as if they were trying to create as many levels of management as possible. Despite constant claims that Bloomberg's culture and eng org is "flat". - Weird management attitudes that expect cult-like work-family devotion when they're below market for firms of similar size, and are PIP'ping. - No career growth. Everyone with the ability to leave or who enjoys building actual software chooses to so within a few years -- many who stay become nightmare bosses in what is visibly a gerontocracy, not a meritocracy. - The teams with the best culture are usually the most stagnant and worst for your resume/career if you want to ever have another job with a better tech company.

Pros

Work life balance is mostly great if you get your stuff done. pay you have to fine in the correct role and department but it is there as long as not in Global Data. Benefits are top notch, especially health care. Mostly smart and nice people around. Offices are great as well.

Cons

Global Data dept is awful for bumps and advancements, and really needs a revamp. All good people in data leave to other departments with higher pay. Sad, but it gets no attention, with bad people doing poor work protected by the fact BBG has monopoly like dominance in the financial market information space. It simply is broken, and has to be fixed.

Pros

great place to start. good support in the beginning where you learn a lot about the industry and make good friends along the way. they do give you opportunities to move into different roles internally that may interest you more, but you may have to fight hard for them now. great benefits.

Cons

dont get me wrong i love the job, but things have changed a lot in these 4 years. there is a bloomberg stigma when trying to pivot to other jobs outside. you end up feeling like a cog in the system that can be replaced eventually since they are constantly hiring and implementing new ai. you cannot negotiate anything about salary or have a valid reason as to why youre falling behind on metrics. if you stay the course onto sales, you just cant have many obligations at home and sign up to travel every other week. In sales, you do get to fly first class and have all expenses paid, but after 6 months the honeymoon phase drains the life out of you and you realize its not all that great to fly away for 4 day weekday trip for work when you have a family back home. if youre a single person who doesnt care and wants to be a free bird, the role is great and you can make decent money, but ive seen those people also wither and fallout of the role to do something else. lately they have been pushing a lot of good people out when they never had to do that.
