Pros

I'm still friends with some wonderful people I met here, even after leaving, and for this reason alone I am giving Braze a second star. Most of the ICs and even some managers were generally nice and pleasant to work with. Work-life balance was okay-ish.

Cons

I was paid below market rate for the volume of work I was taking on, which was handled by 3 people in a parallel department (whereas I was expected to shoulder it alone). I begged multiple times for additional hiring to support my position so I could take vacation or have backup when I was sick, but that never happened. One of my coworkers behaved very insensitively toward me in the aftermath of a violent hate crime against my community that made the national news. On at least one occasion, my disability accommodations were not respected, and I was expected to handle work duties while at a doctor's appointment. I was a contractor for several months and handled a large workload on my own. When I brought up conversion to my manager based on performance, he claimed he did not want to convert me because I wanted to do something else with my career (in the far future), even though I was in an entry level position that most people would transition out of in 1-3 years anyways. I later received a "Meets Expectation" on my end of year review. When I finally took vacation, none of my work was adequately covered by coworkers and I watched it pile up in my inbox. I don't fault them; the labor allocation at Braze, at the time, seemed very lean. Many people were overwhelmed. There was little to no support for internally transferring and I felt there was no opportunity for me to move up at the company. While I felt some ICs were very passionate and genuinely engaged, some aspects of culture and inclusion at Braze felt performative or were not followed up on.

Pros

Company has matured and has become leader in the space, signing bigger deals and renewals with major brands. Reliable benefits package Diversity and inclusion efforts have improved Friendly colleagues and peers A commitment to accommodate all employees personal requests for fully remote, hybrid, or in-office status.

Cons

Overall, your employee experience will depend mostly on your manager and the team members they choose to hire. Most managers don't take a sincere interest in your growth or aspirations, especially if it doesn't serve the bottom line of achieving OKRs or extends beyond the scope of your employment with the company. Work-life balance needs improvement. At the end of the day, it's just a tool to help brands market to their customers. The work you do doesn't have any impact beyond helping million/billion dollar companies make extra profit.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are always looking to learn from our current and former employees to continue to make Braze a top company to work for. We are saddened to hear about your negative experience. Your feedback does come as a surprise as we have not had any engineers leave our organization recently. In the past year, we have had a tremendous focus on our engineering culture. Braze regularly surveys employees on a range of engagement and satisfaction issues, and we're proud to share that our engineering team enjoys above-company-average and industry-average scores in nearly all facets of the survey. We also just had our best and most productive Hack Day ever, an event we do on a quarterly basis. Lastly, we doubled-down on improving our frontend engineering experience earlier this year with the creation of a Dashboard Infrastructure team whose mission is to provide front-end tools that engineers and designers love using. We'd be happy to discuss the issues you encountered at your time at Braze, please feel free to reach out to whomever was your People Business Partner.
