Hours were weird but not the worst place to work, will hire anyone
Pros
Flexibility was my favorite thing about Breakaway, you were never tied down to your schedule longer than a week, there were always people looking for extra shifts so getting time off was easy, and no minimum amount of hours you had to work, if you wanted to do 6 hours in a week that was no problem. 6 hour shifts gave great work/life balance. As far as I know there was not even one layoff or furlough due to the pandemic, more than likely more people were hired since Breakaway Couriers are essential workers. Company is small-mid sized and upper management is available to all employees if needed. Management is constantly expanding the business and working out new deals with different businesses to bring in more work and opportunities for the couriers. Definitely an awesome place to work if you know how to ride a bike but don't have a great resume, better than almost any other option for people in that situation in my opinion.
Cons
Hard to break 40 hours, you could only be scheduled for up to I think 32 hours, I averaged 24 a week. Picking up shifts was cutthroat, most extra hours went to senior employees. A lot of the time there would be a few people working 60+ hours a week while the majority of us couldn't get above 30. Everyone works bad weather days, you get better tips, company gets more orders, but it sucks if you don't have the gear to bike through a snowstorm for hours on end. Super busy weekend days became over-scheduled while I was there, everyone would ask to work those days because they were so busy so eventually so many people were working those days it actually became harder to get a route, and therefore get some tips, on the busiest days than it was on the slower days when less people worked. Work/life balance was great with the 6 hour shifts and 4 day weeks, but if you wanted to work more than that you had to spend a lot of time outside of work waking up early or checking the time to make sure you called in to request shifts right when they were made available at 6am (for the morning crew) because by 6:01am they were all gone.
