Pros

Work from home and the flexibility to go into the office if we want Lots of paid time off including extra holidays The benefits are excellent: health insurance, 6% 401k matching, legal, dental, vision, HSA contribution, etc. Brighthouse is a great place to work culture wise UNLESS you’re on the sales desk. The sales desk managers are good, but upper management still seems stuck in old school thinking

Cons

Morale on the sales desk is low. Upper management and finance don’t seem to appreciate the internal wholesalers. During a time of high inflation, they did not give any additional bonuses or raises to the wholesalers (who gave them record setting sales last year). Instead, they changed the comp plan so that many people would make 20-50% less on variable comp than they did last year. Who does that during a pandemic, at times like this, after record breaking sales? It feels like upper management is obsessed with metrics, and they don’t listen to our feedback on them. It’s as if they don’t trust us, think we are overpaid and want us to “prove” we are working. For some reason, calls count as a contact for metrics, but emails don’t… if I want to have a chance at hitting my call metrics, I have to respond to an email by calling someone even if that isn’t their preference. I have to start work early and work through my lunch most days just to get all of my work done and it still feels like management thinks I’m not doing enough to deserve a raise, promotion or even just what I got paid last year. When we have complained about the comp plan, we were told that we were overpaid last year (the year we set record breaking sales). Now no one is hitting their sales goals and everyone is upset with the comp plan. Correlation?

Pros

Senior management is forward thinking without being pretentiousness. Some key persons in management understand their business. Strong distribution channels. I believe management is committed to providing insurance products customers will use (has genuine value), and focuses on long-term viability as a growing company while providing returns to shareholders.

Cons

The company spun off from Met 5 years ago, and aims to change away from the toxic culture that surrounded this divorce. Almost all the employees came from Met. It is difficult to change an embedded culture. Back channeling; responsibility laundering; siloes; knowledge hoarding, and associates not publicly supporting what they say in private are common occurrences.
