Pros

Fantastic opportunities to work with cutting edge technology and on the frontiers of science. Co-workers are wonderfully supportive and create a wonderful work environment and community.

Cons

Funding insecurity is pervasive. Whether this contributes to missteps in long term planning, or is more an issue directly associated with DOE policy and management is unclear. However, whatever the root cause, a fair bit of the workload falls into the realm of putting out fires, playing catch-up and resolving problems which could have been addressed in advance with a bit more room for organization and planning, and enough staff to accomplish the work.

Pros

World class research theoretically possible. Lots of knowledgeable people around to talk to. Flexible work environment. Mostly good people who mostly work hard.

Cons

Funding terrible. Bad management at the top levels. Elderly work force. Morale is really low. Benefits are eroding. Middle of nowhere but terrible standard of living.

Pros

High level science. Interesting people to work with. Pension plan 401A.

Cons

Destructive management style. Benefits package in decline. Poor leadership. Financial problems as a result of overpaid upper echelon directors. Relationship with Battelle (google it) is questionable. The production of new science is becoming less important than being able to sell new technologies. Not a happy place to work. Human Resources is the worst.
