Pros

The working conditions are fairly good and overtime is paid at time and a half. As well, the company has an official shutdown for almost two weeks during the Christmas - New Year's timeframe. The company officially offers flexible schedules within certain limits (9:30 - 3:30 core hours) and unofficially schedules tend to be completely flexible. Depending on one's manager and one's specific work requirements, it may be possible to work from home.

Cons

It carries the deadweight of a corporate bureaucracy, often cutting off its nose to spite its face. I presume that this occurs in most companies of similar size and age, and so I don't consider it to be alarming; more a fact of life. As well, upper management often does not pay attention to employees' professional concerns until matters get out of hand. Again, in my experience this often tends to be the case in engineering companies. Management tends not to relate well to engineering,. One thing that is different is that CAE tends promote managers from within the engineering ranks, and so many of the managers have an understanding of the type of work their underlings do and can, at times, take employee's suggestions to heart.

Pros

Good technology if you like big projects. Can be quite challenging at times. The work environment is great. CAE can be a good learning ground for someone without much work experience. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to work into a large company for the first time. Most departments will pay overtime which is quite good as some companies won't allow you do to overtime at all. The work schedule is quite flexible. You have to be there between 9h30 and 3h30. Otherwise, the schedule is up to you. CAE is a great place for interns, which is how I got into the company.

Cons

Short term management techniques encourages bad choices for the long run. It is very unclear to the developers why some decisions are made impacting their job. The technology is getting a bit dated and no plans are made to refresh it. Most of the developpers aren't aware of the recent developments in the industry which makes innovation almost innexistant. The location of the building isn't conveniant if you don't own a car. Getting there via public transportation is quite painfull unless you live next to the 40 as you can only get there on bus. The traffic to get there on car is quite frustrating too.

Pros

1) Good entry salary and benefits (dental insurance, pension plan, etc.) 2) Lots of promotion possibilities 3) Mostly interesting projects: military/civil simulators, AI and 3D world simulations, HMI, etc. 4) Decent computers and software (with licenses) 5) Flexible work schedule (I do 11-7, others do 8-4) and possibility to work from home (I do this around once every two weeks)

Cons

1) This is a big place, so lots of processes, meetings, HR stuff, fill that form, enter your hours on that internal IE6-only website, etc. 2) Project managers have often been on the same project for 10+ years 3) Highly dependent on aviation and aerospace industries (2001-2005 were rough) 4) In Montreal, the main plant is well outside downtown, just next to the airport.
