      Amazing Work, Poor Culture

      Pros

      Some of the smartest, most dedicated people you'll ever work with. There's nothing like the sense of accomplishment you get when something you did has real impact. The work itself is extremely important and endlessly fascinating.

      Cons

      It's a big, clunky bureaucracy. There's a sense "competitive martyrdom"--i.e. the sense that the more of your personal life you sacrifice, the more committed you are. There's really no allowance for a family life. The Agency and the mission come first. Everything else is expected to be a distant second.

      Pros

      At the CIA, you feel like you do work that actually makes a difference. They have a structured training program and hold different classes and seminars at least once a week, usually at the main headquarters. Because there are so many employees, there are groups and clubs within the organization for special interests such as Mandarin practice. Their salary is competitive and you are surrounded by hard-working, good people.

      Cons

      You have to lie to almost everyone about what you do for a living or how your day was at work. You cannot have friends from certain countries. If you will be staying in the same house/room with a non-US citizen, you must report it and have it approved in advanced.

      A lot of opportunity to move around within organization. Overseas travel opportunities. Pay and benefits are good.

      Cons

      Over-dramatized and over-politicized organization, backstabbing colleagues.
