Pros

This is a fascinating business (credit card manufacturing and production). I learned a lot. The best part about working at CPI was being able to work with many excellent people.

Cons

(1) There is a "fire-drill" atmosphere, due in part to a number of flawed processes. (Tribal knowledge is a big problem, as well as a lack of cross-training.) While every job has cycles of "high stress", at CPI stress was a constant. (2) Although I received some training in the use of one of the core internal applications, I received zero training in the business itself. (Not even a tour of the facility.) Yet there seemed to be an expectation that we should know it all. (3) The high security environment, though necessary because of the nature of the business, often hampered automation of processes and workflow. An oft-repeated phrase was "working with one hand tied behind your back." There was also a problem with work-life balance. For instance, if I took a day off, more often than not I got called to help with some emergency. There was very high employee turn-over, unlike anything I've ever experienced in my entire adult work life.

Toxic, political, dysfunctional -- major changes needed

Pros

A steady paycheck that was never late. A stable industry that always requires secure card manufacturing vendors. Captive marketplace due to VISA/MasterCard's EMV chip card adoption in the USA.

Cons

- Tremendous turnover in personnel - No real room for upward advancement - Entire executive and middle management rife with internal politics, favoritism, protectionism, rival departmental factions, poor leadership, lack of ethics, bad attitudes, and in many ways, people who are disconnected from reality - A general culture of fear that starts from the Denver head office and is then intentionally spread to all the other locations - Too many unqualified, poorly skilled managers have historically been hired and/or retained for far too long throughout the company - There have been "town hall meetings" held at each location where management has updated the staff on what the sales figures of the company look like but employees are deathly afraid to ask any questions of management for fear of promptly being black-balled and losing their jobs - Creative ideas, innovative thinking and constructive criticism are not encouraged at this company -- be clear on this - Even "exit interviews", for people leaving the company to move on to greener pastures, are really only symbolic in practice - There have been employees who have left this company out of sheer self-preservation and acute stress due to the poisonous and paranoid corporate culture therein - There are valid reasons why there are so many negative reviews about this company posted on Glassdoor.com and not just this one
