      Great coworkers, little opportunity

      Pros

      I had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students, my coworkers in my department were incredibly bright and dedicated, flex schedule (in my department but the university condones this), and a great relationship with my superiors.

      Cons

      I am unsure how other departments are structured, however there was virtually no opportunity for advancement in my area. After a restructuring I worked outside my classification for 18 months. I repeatedly requested reclassification or for an increase in compensation to no avail. If you want to keep great employees, you have to treat them like they are valuable.

      A Nightmarish Place to Teach

      Pros

      Good benefits and bureaucratic paperwork not excessive like at some schools. Relatively easy to navigate the campus/administration.

      Cons

      Students are unprepared for college work and are not respected or challenged by most professors. When a professor does come along that expects them to come to class prepared and write above a 9th grade level, they are shocked to hear that their skills are below average. The department chair of my department cared more about high enrollments and positive evals than about education. She suggested I teach a comic book version of Othello to students rather than the actual play because "they won't be able to understand" the original.
