Pros

Job security, promotional opportunities, lots of variety in jobs available, made to feel of value.

Cons

Knowledge sharing about functions of each branch is lacking. Hiring managers with no people skills and management experience. Certain programs are favorites and receive more funding to purchase new equipment where other programs have to make do or purchase items with their own money.

Pros

They offer a great pension and are generous with time off requests. They don't expect a lot from their employees. They offer plenty of overtime. It's a good way to get your foot in the door with the state. But move to another agency as soon as possible.

Cons

There is no leadership or even a general sense of direction given by management. Training is conducted by fellow employees with no training background. The entire training process needs to be revamped. Training that could be completed in 1 month or less is stretched out over several painful months. Most benefits except pension are extremely poor and costly compared to my past jobs. Customer service is non-existent. Promotion is based on whether or not you are approved of by management, not based on skill or ability. Communication between employees and management are strained. There is no tolerance for process improvement or suggestions. Union dues are required. The union has even less leadership ability than management.

Pros

Supportive staff, rewarding work that you know you're making a difference in the lives of people experiencing difficulty, incredible potential for growth within the company.

Cons

Job security within CA is becoming a thing of the past. The annual budget crisis makes for a stressful work environment when July comes around.
