Graduation time may be very long for PhD students. Sometimes can not get timely feedback from advisors and coworkers.

Experience varies widely between research groups. Most PIs are big names in their respective fields, which helps in the long run. Lots of resources and funding in many cases. Small community means you know many people well.

Cons

Since it's a small school, some resources are limited (centralized user facilities are not as large). Lots of competition between students, which can be toxic. Some faculty are very political and don't like each other.
