      Pros

      Constantly surrounded by incredibly smart people. A great place to converse about new ideas in science and technology. Open access to a large number of equipment and facilities on a small campus.

      Cons

      The community is small and tightly-nit. There are high expectations for graduate researchers to be very independent. Typically there is limited access to faculty advising, especially in larger research groups

      One of the best institutions in the world Excellent opportunities to publish your work in top journals Pasadena is a nice area to live in

      Not many options for growth: once you're hired as a postdoc there is no room for growth Pasadena is a relatively expensive area to live in

      Pros

      My graduate school experience at Caltech has been very good. My classes were interesting, hard and well-taught. My research group is doing innovative and potentially groundbreaking work, and I work very sane hours.

      Cons

      The administration often makes knee-jerk or reactionary decisions. There is little to no feedback on how you are doing as a graduate student or what you could be doing better.
