Pros

Flexible hours, interesting work. Most days are low stress. In one way or another, working as a GRA exercises your scientific skills. Often, we are given opportunities to teach, also.

Cons

Often hours are long, and the experience is highly dependent on your PI/Advisor. And the fact is, for better or for worse, this is effectively an apprenticeship--we are ostensibly in a "teaching by doing" program, that is effectively cheap research labor.

Pros

Working or studying here is a great opportunity, if you can get admitted or hired. This is a very driven and high producing campus, across all disciplines, so you can expect the culture to push you to your best. The undergraduate community is unique, in the absolute best ways (but sometimes, also the worst ways). Being a teaching assistant lets you get to know some very prestigious faculty besides your adviser.

Cons

The school is small, so might not have as rich of opportunities to collaborate with others within your department (some groups are very specialized and non-overlapping).

Pros

Campus is beautiful, weather is perfect 9 months of the year, administration is efficient. Access to technical and scientific resources is good. Not far from UCLA. World-class faculty and students.

Cons

Due to smaller size, research topics are not as broad as a place like, e.g., UCLA or Stanford. Traffic is bad if you don't live in Pasadena. Summers are very hot. The physical library holdings are not especially large (for such a famous technical school), and quite specialized.
