Pros

Attracts brilliant people, hosts cutting-edge research, very small university that takes care of students individually and flexibly, flexible hours, great career prospects

Cons

It is easy to get sucked into an unhealthy work-life balance, as a lot of people work very hard. One has to make a conscious effort to withstand the pressure, but it is possible. Grad student salary is very low, but that's an issue with science in general and not with Caltech (Caltech's salary may be pretty good compared to other universities, but I don't know for sure).

Pros

Incredible working environment. Small campus. Friendly atmosphere. Beautiful campus. Well maintained. Access to world-class seminars, minds.

Cons

You have to pay for parking, about $500/year. You have to pay for the gym (now), about $40/month. The salaries should be higher; everyone works their butts off. The expectation is to work OT without extra pay.

Pros

Hard to think of any right now

Cons

As you might have deduced from the title of this review, Caltech (as of 2015) does not withhold taxes from postdoc fellowships. This means you will have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year, which is a huge pain. This makes me very glad that I'm no longer there, but until April 15th 2016, the nightmare of doing my taxes will remind me how awful it was to be a postdoc there.
