Pros

Good cafe, pay is decent , that’s it

Cons

Experience is heavily dependent on the team you get. Too many international students working in roles you can get US citizens easily for. It’s like they go out of their way to hire foreign students - someone should look into this. Work culture is very very toxic. Unnecessary PIPs. Find a better company to work for - you can get another job easily if you’re half decent in that you do.

Pros

- The people are top caliber: high performers who are all smart and accomplished - Pay is typically very high for banking, comparable to big tech - Work flexibility is incredible: time off is not tracked, hybrid offices, and no external pressure to work > 8 hours

Cons

First place I've worked where people cared more about their personal achievements than the success of the team / business. Performance management process is messy: - Stack ranking - Comparisons regardless of job families (SWEs were compared against POs and PgMs) - No time in role factor; if you join the team mid review cycle your accomplishments are compared against those in role longer with no grace period to acclimate. New employees were essentially guaranteed low rating in first review cycle. While the above encouraged consistent high performances, it resulted in an I > team mindset. Employees would consistently de-prioritize any collaboration that didn't directly improve their individual performance rating, occasionally even sabotage coworkers to get an advantage in the stack ranking.

Pros

Strong Tech Stack: Capital One remains a leader in cloud-native banking; the tools and technologies used are generally modern and relevant. Talented Peers: You get to work with some very bright engineers who are technically capable. Brand Recognition: Having the name on your resume carries weight in the fintech and engineering space.

Cons

Organizational Instability: Frequent reorgs have become the norm, yet they often occur without a clear long-term roadmap. This makes it difficult to see a path for career growth or to feel invested in a specific product. Brutal Performance Management: The current culture around performance reviews is high-stress and often feels punitive rather than constructive. It has shifted the focus from "building the right thing" to "doing what survives the review." Task-Oriented vs. Impact-Oriented: Because of the rigid stack-ranking/review culture, many engineers focus on low-risk, highly visible tasks to secure their spots rather than pursuing innovative or meaningful architectural improvements. Internal Red Tape: For a company that prides itself on being a "tech company," the internal bureaucracy and constant shifts in leadership priorities create significant friction.
