Pros

Good compensation and smart people are the reason people come to Capital One and the reason people stay at Capital One. The company recruits from top schools throughout the country (and the world), and invests heavily in professional development. In general, the company does a lot of the right things for employees -- allows working from home, good benefits (which don't increase in cost by 10%+ every year), fair severance (historically), etc.

Cons

Job security is virtually non-existent. Growth is gone, which makes it difficult to advance as senior managers protect their kingdoms instead of take on risks. Performance reviews and bonuses are driven more by tenure and politics than the company's managers would like to admit, and HR has a long track record of blunders when trying to address these problems.

Pros

They are pretty much the only game in town if you want decent pay.

Cons

The amount of politics and inter-departmental backstabbing is worse than any company I have ever worked. We hired a bunch of DC (Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac) sharks who thrive on stamping out new ideas and replacing them with bean counters and yes-men. The women executives organized their own lobbying group to put more of their own into key positions, as did the GLT (Gay, Lesbian, and Transgendered). It's just gotten ridiculously out of control. It is 'Dilbert' on a gigantic scale, and no one has the courage to change it. Those who have tried, mysteriously end up 'redeployed' (code word for fired).

Pros

High salaries, low cost of living in Richmond make for a nice combo.

Cons

Highly political. Promotions based more on favorites and compliance to a corporate model of success than talent. Troubled industry, limited growth.
