Good Company with Good Benefits

Pros

Focus on the safety culture is the best I've seen, top notch, and forefront in all decisions made at all levels of management from the technician on the floor all the way to the CEO. Benefits package is amongst best in industry. PTO policy is average and satisfactory. A diverse group of employees with lots of experience to aide newer employees with onboarding. A nice, robust training program for engineers and new employees to learn the job/plant. Great relocation program and associated benefits. A solid history of a very diverse company with a world-wide reach and impact. You're part of an organization that gives back to local organizations resulting in a positive impact to our surrounding communities. Environmentally responsible company that is committed and strives to make our planet cleaner. A large company with a lot of opportunity for growth. Great mentorship program for up and coming engineers that are currently in school looking for relevant experience that directly collates to their respective study program.

Cons

The value of the salaried worker has declined drastically in relation to company earnings and profit over the past two years. Work/Life balance is steadily increasing in the wrong direction with many hours spent at home and work to accomplish task given; Management is over-burdening the average worker and first level managers to the point of running them off. This is due to the second point, which is, they eliminate jobs and stack those responsibilities on others not otherwise qualified to perform various roles and responsibilities; This is also evident by their pursuit to eliminate mid-level management and hoping technicians without the education & experience will take over those responsibilities. The poor decisions of management at the Business Unit level and Senior levels of local Plant Management have created fictional, non-obtainable, unrealistic goals or metrics which resulted in the elimination of current and future raises, promotions, and bonuses for hard, overworked employees under them while they tell us once-a-month how well were doing in a video presentation to everyone.

Pros

The hours were pretty reasonable...although you are basically on call 24/7 365, the demands outside of the office are reasonable.

Cons

Where do we begin? The management is the worst I have seen in any organization. Although Cargill as a whole maintains a good brand image, the business unit I was in was full of uneducated and absent management. It was clear that you climb the ranks because of someone you know and not because of skills or potential. Management was basically just there to collect their enormous salaries with minimal effort. The salary left a lot to be desired...and the benefits are terrible, high deductible plans with high out of pocket maximums. If you desire to better yourself through further education get ready to play 20 questions...instead of getting support with your goals, they become paranoid that your end goal is to leave them. Overall, a top heavy, stagnant workplace with virtually no room for advancement filled with inept management. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere before considering working here.

Pros

Great People, great on-boarding, good work life balance

Cons

Cargill is silently outsourcing THOUSANDS of jobs over the last 4 years. It's not talked about, but they have already done most of IT and now are working through HR. It's not a great idea, the staff moral is down and you never know when it is going to happen to your position. The entire CBS group is run by 1/2 rate staff from other countries.
