Pros

The health insurance package offered is very low in cost to its employees. Employee discount is very good. 2 weeks vacation after one year is also a good benefit.

Cons

This company is run by liars and thieves. Managers are hired as salaried employees with the agreement they will have a 40 hour work week. Starting your second week, the schedule will change and extra hours will be added with no additional compensation. On week three managers are told they need to work a 6 day work week in order to be eligible for the "managerial bonus" which is promised on your annual review. Annual reviews don't happen and neither do raises or bonuses. The owners of this store do not share any sales or profit information with staff. There has not been a physical inventory in this company in over 25 years. Inventory is still done by literally hand writing your order manually entering it into a 30 year old computer system. Employee safety in not a concern at Carr Hardware. The store is located in a high crime neighborhood with a mental health hospital next door. The parking lot is dimly lit, security cameras are unable to identify the people that are entering the store (in case of a robbery), the warehouse shelving is completely unsafe with unsecure freight balancing up to the ceiling just waiting to fall and kill someone, rotten shelving outside waiting to collapse, explosive liquids stored directly outside the boiler room door (should be out of building), sewage in basement constantly flooding inventory (then the inventory is sold or rented). There is not enough space on this website for me to list off all the CONS !!!

Pros

great regular customers and co-workers, chance to learn different departments, customer service a priority

Cons

do not hire from within, pitiful compensation, and failure of management/ownership to appreciate hard workers results in high employee turnover and a toxic workplace, special preference shown towards female employees, hard to get time off and guilt trips for calling in sick, even less diversity in management than employees (mostly white men), rude customers, useless union that you have to pay dues

Pros

If you are a quick learner, this is a good place to gain retail and hardware experience. Because Carr is a True Value, you can take advantage of TV's database of training and knowledge. Some managers are better at training than others. Company has been around for many many years and seem financially stable. Some long term employees who seem satisfied. Vendors are willing to help train you also if you ask. Better to work at another location than Pittsfield.

Cons

Pay is minimum wage. Hires a lot of part timers to avoid paying benefits. You must join union, which costs you every month but gives you nothing. Employee turnover seems excessive and many are let go with no explanation to employees as to why. Hours are super long if you are salaried and you are not compensated for overtime or given comp time for anything over 40. Uses bare minimum staff. Managers watch the store from the second floor balcony like hawks waiting for a meal. Also watch cameras from home. Overheard racist remarks from owner many times.
