Growth Can be Painful, and Rewarding

Pros

Castlight is at the forefront of digital health. Currently, this organization is working to bring two legacy products (Healthcare Navigation & Wellness Integration) together after a merger in 2017. Not only is navigating healthcare hard but so is bringing together the technologies. Hard work can be both a pro and a con. Castlight offers competitive pay, and a great benefits package. The teams are collaborative and dedicated to the mission of the company. Being part of such an important mission is a great feeling, and helping grow this business has been a rewarding experience.

Cons

Moving from startup mode into an operationalized business can sometimes be painful. Startup Clients have a different mentality and expectations than clients looking for established enterprises. Navigating the waters between startup mode and established enterprise can be stressful at times. (But when you have a win, it's worth it) Likewise, employees who come into a startup mode often have different expectations than those who come into an established business. This can lead to some toxicity among those employees which impacts the larger engagement of the team (as seen in some of the more negative reviews).

Thank you for sharing your thoughtful feedback. As one team on a mission, Castlight as a whole shares your position that hard work can be very rewarding when it positively affects something as important as healthcare. Making a difference in people’s lives—in a growth-oriented and community-based environment—is incredibly rewarding. We appreciate your suggestion to set clear and attainable expectations across our employee population as well as our book of business.

A Great Experience

Pros

Been with Castlight for almost 3 years, and work on a smaller, nimble team, and during this time I have added progressive responsibilities to increase my skills. I feel that management cares about my growth. We drive for results, but also make sure we take time to talk about where I see my career going. There are company-wide career growth programs aimed at empowering folks to be in the driver’s seat as far as their career development goes. Good benefits - I can pick-and-choose what I need - with a flexible work environment. As employees, we all get the opportunity to use our own health & well-being product. Salary, bonus, and equity are competitive. There is a constant stream of internal communications, including regular all-hands; we know what the company’s goals are. There is a Culture Empowerment Program dedicated to employees’ interests and passions, including 15+ clubs (sports, entertainment, volunteering, etc.). Company events are fun, and there are several each year and some include spouses and children – but I will say, the competition definitely heats up during the Halloween costume contest. We stay well-nourished with snacks and weekly lunches.

Cons

Lots of change as healthcare is a complex industry, and can be tough to navigate. Change can be fatiguing and generate anxiety, and management acknowledges when this happens. Got to make sure we make time for our well-being. Need to keep our focus on the long game and not knee-jerk react at short-term hiccups in the industry. There is an engaged team at Castlight and we’re all interested in making sure our mission is an ongoing success.

Pros

The culture at Castlight is respectful, collaborative and open minded. Engineers are dedicated to good quality work and responsible, going the extra mile to make sure that things are correct for our users. We are passionate about our mission to improve healthcare in this country. That's helps us feel like we are on the same team and have the same goals, which makes it easy to come up with compromises that we all feel comfortable with.

Cons

Our culture is a bit conflict averse, so sometimes we don't have the difficult conversations early enough.
