Pros

1. Some genuinely great people to work with (mainly junior to mid level staff). The culture is definitely not up or out. Collegiate meritocracy 2. Some really interesting projects in the petroleum sector 3. More opportunities to take on responsibility for junior staff compared to other firms, partly due to the smaller number of consultants

Cons

1. The senior management is incompetent and at times dishonest towards staff 2. Lack of fair and rigorous promotion system - top performers are not consistenly rewarded and lot's of deadweight being retained. Most of the junior consulting staff can't even perform basic discounted cashflow analysis - a basic tool to a management consultant 3. Non existent brand name 4. Project delivery quality is inconsistent. Some are delivered to a very poor quality which clients should not really be paying for

Pros

We do very interesting and very good work in the business consulting group, with international work opportunities available if you can make the case. A great stepping stone for junior level staff, preparing them for roles in industry, for business school, or for law school. If you are working in the best groups or with the best managers you will learn a lot, work directly with clients, and have a high level of responsibility and exposure.

Cons

CRA has very high quality people for the most part, although some slip through the cracks and come in not knowing powerpoint and excel, and leave not knowing them very well either. CRA does not have an "up or out" policy like most consulting firms. Promotions are given out like candy by some and withheld by others, resulting in a lack of a clear career progression for junior level staff. Junior staff are not trained and given opportunities to manage work... Depending on the type of project and who the manager is, junior level staff can be victims of the "expert-analyst" model, can be pidgeon-holed, and are often used as "brute analytical and googling resources" than as true consultants.

Pros

Build up quant skills, and billing model allows for flexibility in work-life balance. Good primer for how to work in a professional consulting firm, and decent training in Excel, Powerpoint, SAS. Great connections with faculty at leading business schools.

Cons

Driven by billing model (bill as many hours as you can) rather than doing high-value work. Many tasks were encouraged to be done in a tedious manner rather than spending the time to develop a scalable, elegant solution (which earns less for the company).
