Toxic Leadership and Lack of Structure

Pros

There is potential here, but without a major overhaul in leadership and organizational structure, the environment remains demoralizing and unsustainable.

Cons

This company suffers from serious leadership issues that significantly impact the culture and employee experience. Several individuals in management roles operate from a place of ego rather than leadership—regularly undermining others to elevate themselves. Feedback and decisions are often driven by personal bias rather than objective performance or value to the company. If you're not in a leader’s inner circle, you're at risk of being dismissed, disregarded, or torn down to preserve their own image. Many of these individuals should not be in positions of power. They lack emotional intelligence, consistently confuse authority with competence, and manage through intimidation or exclusion rather than support and accountability. Beyond the toxic leadership dynamics, the company is extremely disorganized. Responsibilities are unclear and there is no consistent structure to support growth. The refusal to use job titles makes career advancement nearly impossible and creates confusion around roles and expectations. The culture is cold and disconnected—colleagues often treat each other like strangers. Constant restructuring and drawn-out, unnecessary meetings only add to the chaos.

Pros

The benefits package is stellar if you don’t need decent medical coverage. For the most part the people here are wonderful, polite and helpful. From the outside looking in the campus is beautiful and has amazing placement around plenty of shops and restaurants. Most co-workers are highly skilled and knowledgeable.

Cons

However, there is a fraternity-like atmosphere. One team looks down and treats other teams beneath them. The CEO himself behaves in this fashion himself. As far as the core values – those things were once the focus of this company. Now, they’re an afterthought if they don’t get in the way of a more profitable opportunity. Lets talk about how diversity, equality and inclusion are just buzz words to these folks. Let’s talk about the lack of equal pay. Let’s talk about gaslighting employees about their performance so they can treat positions on teams like game of thrones and make calculated moves to dismiss employees to bring on family and friends less qualified while passing over those who would be more beneficial for that position and would enrich their career path. Let’s talk about being pigeonholed in a position because management wants what’s best for Chatham and not what your career goals are. Where management interjects what makes you successful and doesn’t acknowledge the success you want for yourself. As for advice – I can only hope after the significant amount of turnover in the HR department that the new HR department will allow for those buzzwords to become the new values. This company used to put actions to values. Let’s get back there. Let's mean what we say and not weaponize feedback for dismissals and contort what’s said to fit a narrative that pits management against employees.

Pros

For recent college graduates looking for a first job, this is a great place to gain some professional experience. If you get in with the right group, you may have a wonderful, nurturing experience in which to grow. The staff members that work at Chatham are hard-working, humble people, and wonderful to work with.

Cons

Most jobs are very processing related and feel relatively transactional and "dead end" in terms of professional growth. Leadership is seriously lacking. Chatham typically promotes people that are good at their jobs and puts them in leadership positions without any support or training in how to lead and mentor others. Promotions are very few and far between. Additionally, experienced hires are not valued for their input and recommendations for improvement because the long-timers make the rules and call the shots. Leadership is not open to new ideas from new employees. Favoratism runs rampant, even if the "favorites" are hurting the company's growth. Overall, I would recommend Chatham to new college graduates, but not to others with work experience outside of Chatham. It can be a very frustrating experience for those wanting to make an impact on the organization.
