2021 and beyond is looking ripe with opportunity

Pros

Kind, smart coworkers and extremely collaborative work environment. I love that our product team wants to get in front of customers to learn about their wants and needs, and our candidate and customer teams collaborate often to improve candidate and customer experiences. Leadership that cares - while 2020 was challenging and we had to tighten our belts, the weekly and biweekly all hands kept us in the loop and connected. I felt more secure knowing that our leadership team was being overly cautious and was one of the first tech companies to mandate work from home back in March. I know they will take all of our concerns into consideration as we approach a day when we will potentially return to the office. I'm glad to see we've restarted hiring and filling roles, brought back perks such as the very generous education reimbursement, merit increases, etc. The xmas bonus that was given to all employees truly showed that the company cares about ALL employees no matter what level or role. Feels very autonomous, but supported by leadership. There is a ton of room for career growth as the new business opportunity is large, existing business is doing well as we innovate, and with that growth will come a need for larger, segmented teams (i.e. promo and leadership opportunities across all roles in the company) 2020 was extremely busy and challenging, but we stuck together, worked hard, and ended up having a great year where we helped thousands of people get hired quickly through our customers. We also did well as a business, which we should all be very proud of as each of us in every role contributed to the results!

Cons

While I understand the need to focus on efficiency and cost savings, we are running very lean on some teams. I'm hoping this year brings more budget for resourcing so those teams feel supported and can support the rest of the business. Products are launching and changing every day. We need more ongoing enablement across the board to keep up with the changes and help us onboard new hires in a remote environment.

Thanks for the thoughtful and balanced review. And I do think you will see more resources being hired as we're back to scaling our headcount in 2021. The year has started off really strong and so we hope to keep up the recruiting pace to match. We sincerely appreciate your grit and attitude through a tough covid 2020 and let's keep fighting to grow Checkr! - Arthur / Recruiting

Pros

- Most non-management employees are brilliant, fun, hard-working, and pleasant to work with.

Cons

- Low pay. The base is around the average or below average of similar companies around the Bay Area. The equity portion in terms of dollars is extremely low relative to all companies in the Bay Area. Do not let them sell you on how the equity will grow in the future. - Highly political. Management will make nonsensical decisions based on office politics, e.g. making themselves look good or protecting their own backs at the expense of sacrificing their subordinates. - Highly hierarchal. The "leadership team" must be worshipped at all times otherwise if you ever stepped on their toes even once despite having sound reason, you are at risk of being managed out the company in the near future. Avoid interacting with the "leadership team" at all costs otherwise you might end up in their crosshair. - No upwards career mobility. There is a lack of clear path to level up in many current roles. Management will throw smokes and mirrors at you about saying you have to do this and that. But at the end of the day, getting promoted really depends on whether or not the manager likes you. - High degrees of nepotism. If you work there for just a few months, you will start seeing certain group cliques. If you do not belong in one of them, good luck on getting raises, promotions, or even having job safety. - No help from HR. I don't really know why we have them? They tend to be really reactive to things. Other than getting paid to do damage control on Glassdoor with petty responses and fake reviews, they don't really do much to help the employees. Do not approach them if you can. - Lack of transparency. Constant streams of layoffs were unanticipated and people were let go without any warnings. Transparency is one of the "core" values. Why not just remove it from the "core" values instead of hypocritically preaching it for marketing purposes? - Constant streams of layoffs. - People from the "leadership team" getting fired or leaving in a periodical basis. The amount of times Checkr showcases a vignette of a person getting hired into the "leadership team" and then having them leave in less than 1 year is laughable.
