If you are not in management, your input doesn’t mean squat, so don’t bother offering it. The message to employees: Just keep your mouth shut and do your job, and you’ll get your paycheck in return. Management does not value suggestions from the underlings, and they only ask for it as a front, so that they can tell senior leadership that the employees had a chance to give suggestions.
There is no fairness in pay here. Employees may receive a pittance amount each year as a raise (not even half of the cost of living increases), however, management continues to receive healthy bonuses.
Depending on what meeting you attend, you’ll either hear how well the company is doing financially (to make leadership look good) or how precarious our financial situation is (to justify not giving employees more money). The messages are inconsistent and anything but transparent.
Communication is horrid. Information is treated like a valuable commodity and hoarded. Many times, it is possible to find out about your own department’s initiatives from someone in another department.
The hospital holds an employee survey periodically, but it’s another front and waste of money. The management trivializes and makes excuses for negative reports and does not take action or make any improvements. How discouraging to the poor saps who actually took the survey and thought it would make a difference! It’s always sad to see that happen to the new employees, before they learn better and become cynical.
Bottom line: if you are a talented, motivated, hard-working professional – you won’t be for long! You’ll get burned out from being overworked and from the frustration about the lack of pay, resources, and support. As soon as you reach the point where your eyes are opened, you’ll start looking for someplace else where your contributions are actually valued.
