Pros

Great Managers Great Co-Workers Great Benefits Cool tech company with a sincere mission to help independent restaurants

Cons

The Great Managers? All laid off The Great Co-Workers? All laid off I get it, layoffs happen. This is a business, not a charity. However the multiple rounds of layoffs were frequently the results of the executive team not having a clear vision for what the company can and should be. Every time a new idea was implemented it seemed like 2 months later it was scrubbed. After each round of layoffs the CEO would release a video on slack pretty much explicitly stating “they made some missteps and grew too fast” or “didn’t really understand how certain things would play out.” Here’s the problem at the core of all these issues. The product does not address the needs of restaurants in 2022. Selling ChowNow is like trying to convince your friends to sign up for MySpace in 2010. Sorry but Facebook exists and it does all the same things but better. There used to be a real need for online ordering that wasn’t Doordash or UberEats. Then every POS system out there completely undercut ChowNow’s entire business model by adding online ordering which also intergrates directly into their inventory management. Would you rather pay $20/month for an add on to the POS system you’ve already invested in or pay $200/month to ChowNow to do the same thing but with less functionality? Marketplace is a cool idea too, but again, restaurants almost universally solved the “commission free online ordering” dilemma when they were forced to in 2020. The best case scenario is that a larger company like Toast or Square buys out ChowNow and the executive team gets to cash out on their decade of hard work. Investment in the company has begun to dry up because growth has stagnated. Will ChowNow survive in an economy where liquidity isn’t as free flowing as it has been in the last 10 years? Probably not. There’s lots of great people that work there and I’m rooting for them but the future does not look bright for this company. Accept a job here at your own risk.

Pros

-Pretty good people, good pay, good perks

Cons

I used to LOVE working there and enjoyed selling the product (even though it’s hit a wall and is not remaining competitive now) After experiencing four mass layoffs in a year, I lost respect for the company and execs. Company culture and morale plummeted significantly (insincere empathy, crocodile tears) , product was stagnant, upper management making bad financial decisions which resulted in tons of people losing their jobs (i.e. opening the new office which costs so much), unfulfilled promises, TERRIBLE commission structure. To get paid your commission, you have to rely on onboarding and you can work so hard to get accounts launched but you can’t control onboarding. They fate of earning more, is in the hands of onboarding (fix this!!!). And no room for growth! HR acts like they care but nothing ever changed when employees complained about things. Unrealistic quota. They talk about diversity and have ERGs but nothing great came out of it and it just didn’t get the attention it deserved. Sad to say there are definitely more cons than pros…

Pros

The founders do care and want the business to succeed. The benefits are better than you find at other companies of the same size or larger. The hiring process for team members is thorough and a lot of wonderful people work here.

Cons

ChowNow, like Zoom, skyrocketed revenue due to the demand brought by the pandemic but instead of saving for a rainy day and continuing at the pace a smaller sized medium company should it had starry eyes and bet it all. The rainy day is now here. The culture has taken a huge hit this last year and employees in all departments have no idea where things are going even when we get presented to because none of it sounds like well thought out strategic planning. We have a mixed bag of executives from a variety of backgrounds that seem more tied to where they came from instead of what they could bring to the table to grow or at the very least make ChowNow a consistent company. The next tier of leaders in the Director category just seem to go along with whatever. Other cons are that many processes are archaic and carefully guarded because the old regime does not want to get exploited as first time leaders and new leadership or IC’s that try to bring new thought are quickly undermined and sandbagged. This leads to misalignment across departments and kills innovation. Ask any regular employee at the company what our marketing plan, sales goals, product roadmap, operational improvements, and financial goals are for the near future and you’ll get a sweeping “I don’t know”.
