Coolest Internship

Pros

Met some really cool people. Got to go to the Kentucky Derby and Oaks and get paid for it. They had an entire buffet set up in the office for both days. Leading up to Derby an Oaks they had fun internal events that I could be a part of. My boss was a bit stern, but he was amazing and gave me a truly memorable experience. This internship will be ingrained in my mind as one of the coolest moments in my college career. It gave me great experience and looks absolutely wonderful on my resume. The other office workers were kind and welcoming, they provided me with a positive and encouraging work environment.

Cons

You will be very busy. Derby day and Oaks are very hectic and fast-paced.

Good company

Pros

The management team is good, honest, fair, and open-minded. There is a great work-life balance and the company does not mind people working from home when necessary. Ask, if you work there for many years, you get 5 weeks PTO.

Cons

Working at Churchill Downs means you never get to enjoy the KY Derby. In office perks are limited to coffee and soda. Benefit package is average.

Pros

Event and facility prestige make it relatively easy to secure sales leads. However, closing is still challenging because the product is significantly overpriced and customer service is not a priority to management. I met a lot of great people. I learned a lot and was able to sell a product I probably wasn't qualified to (at that point in my career).

Cons

Pay, it is bare bones and the bonus structure is unbelievably convoluted. The worst part is the top 5% of the company make extremely healthy wages, while an overwhelming majority of people are underpaid and viewed as disposable. Corporate management does not care about its employees, customers or public perception. The only concern is increasing the stock price and giving themselves raises. Since there is only one Kentucky Derby and it is a truly unique event, the company has a monopoly. This breeds a poisonous culture that is characterized by ineptitude, politics, underachievement, turnover, apathy, resentment and horrendous morale. The corporate culture is disgusting.
