Pros

Rewarding if you love public service. Opportunities to volunteer for lots of diverse projects. Pay is honestly great for government, with COLAs every year.

Cons

White collar union makes motivating staff difficult sometimes. Administration is green and everything is chaotic. Incentive program to delay retirement means younger employees plateau and promotions are few

Pros

The atmosphere was great and the colleagues I worked with were fantastic. My boss was also terrific. The city also provides probably the best health care coverage I have ever had and tons of other really good benefits. I was allowed to grow technically too.

Cons

The pay was the ultimate reason I had to leave working for the city. There was very little room for salary growth. I am not a materialistic person but for my situation during that time the cost of everything was dramatically on the rise and I was starting to not be able to keep up. So I had to take a job for higher pay and remoting options.
