Great people, Poor leadership

Pros

Some amazing people, great product, fully remote as long as you're not within commuting distance of an office space.

Cons

There are very few leaders in leadership. Managers+ are promoted based on how long they have been there, and not based on any sort of merit (see pretty much ALL of the PeopleOps team). For a company that is as old as it is, there is such poor communication between departments. Nothing is documented, there are no proper metrics for success and growth, no training or development, and managers are completely clueless as to how to support their employees. The email announcing the layoffs (which we were PROMISED were not happening) was also cold and unfeeling- ChatGPT could have written it with more compassion.

Pros

I've been here at CircleCI for a few months as a senior engineer and I could not be happier. I especially appreciate how diverse the teams are here. I am working with more women-identified and people of color engineers than I ever have in my career. I also appreciate how much the culture emphasizes not just the technical skills of the engineers but their ability to uplift and enable their teammates and their colleagues in different teams. What people are promoted and praised for is uplifting and mentoring, not just for being the "rockstar" who can solve things solo. That is such a breath of fresh air to experience. I also appreciate how collaborative the culture here is. On my team, we pair programming often and when anyone has questions or would like help, people response kindly and thoughtfully. I also appreciate all the benefits the company offers. The healthcare coverage for an entire family is great and we have wellness days as well as holidays like Juneteenth off. The gratitude slack channel is one of my favorites and really reflects the culture of the company as a whole. Also the amount of feedback that is requested and given makes me feel like so many people and teams are dedicated to transparency, sharing context, growing together. Overall, I am incredibly very impressed and would genuinely recommend this as a place to work, which I cannot say for any other place I have worked over the last 7 years.

Cons

The company is growing a lot in a short amount of time. There's still processes to polish but so much thinking is being done internally that this is not that big of a con. I do wish there was a 401K match.

Pros

I was with CircleCI from the time they were about 30 people to about 130 people. I assumed that in that growth the company would begin to care less and less about its individual team members. Instead, this held steady (and very high) through the full time there. Most anyone working in the start up arena, personal growth and job advancement matters a lot, and it was great to see CircleCI Management consistently make that a priority even when it was hard ('cause anyone can do it when it is easy.)

Cons

Not a lot of cons, here. As long as the technology holds true, and the company continues to care for it's team, I would recommend CCI to most anyone.
