Bad engineering has its cost

Pros

Good pay, good benefits. Free coffee.

Cons

Whatever you do avoid the projects that manage large numbers of servers. Poor engineering of products. Documentation is lacking. In my job the debug / edit / compile cycle was approximately 1 hour (versus a few minutes at most other companies). This is due to bad choices made in engineering, and the cost on current employees is very high. Cisco does not "eat its own dogfood." So the complex task of managing hundreds of servers is not deployed at Cisco. Furthermore, the company isn't willing to invest much in hardware. You'll be forced to use "simulators" to debug things, being that there is no big set of hardware to use. Also, if you are not Asian you may not "fit in". Don't expect the other employees to be very friendly or helpful.

Acquire and Destroy

Pros

Compensation is higher than normal for Greater Atlanta Area IT sector. If you're in the right group, you can be shielded from most of the upper level management shenanigans, politics and bad business decisions. If you're not in the right group - all bets are off.

Cons

Cisco has a habit of acquiring companies and then destroying them. This is certainly the case with their acquisition of Scientific Atlanta, all traces of which will certainly cease to exist within the next two years. Upper level management is a revolving door and there is a high level of chaos as folks scramble to maintain employment - often working on projects that have very little chance of succeeding.
