Pros

Very orderly, lesson plans prepared, my lead teacher seemed to enjoy the experience. Professional attire and practice demanded.

Cons

SBCS is a no-excuses charter, meaning minimal behavior altercations in the classroom are not approved of. If a child disrupts a lesson in the slightest, or even moves there hands out of their laps or folded in front of them, they are moved a scale of colors. If there are 3 infractions they are moved into another classroom. This does create great order, but the kids are not given a chance to speak, interact, or have any free-will. This culture dominates the school and is oppressive. Also, lesson plans are provided and assessed down to where you stand in the classroom, so autonomy as a teacher is sacrificed. SBCS also had some controversy revolving around food withholding as a punishment.

Thank you so much for your feedback - we appreciate you taking time to help us improve our organization. You were spot on in your assessment of our level of professionalism. We take this work seriously and expect our employees to reflect that seriousness in their attire and practice. While we are equally appreciative of your constructive feedback, we think the characterizations of an “oppressive” and “militant” culture are exaggerated. We do value order in the classroom and throughout the school building and believe because we have an orderly and structured environment, teachers and students are liberated to produce exceptional results as teachers and learners. Again, we are thankful for your feedback and will definitely remain vigilant to ensure our school culture is productive but we have no intentions to “chill out” until every kid in the South Bronx is attending a first class school.

Dark place to work

Pros

Solid pay and benefits, kids are generally great.

Cons

Very intense place to work. Hours are generally 10-12 hours a day with little to no break. Turnover is very high for good reason. Philosophy revolves around punishing and shaming students for any failure to comply. No recess for kids and kids are robbed of time in specials if their test scores are not satisfactory. Teachers are forced to follow a script for lessons and cannot be creative in their planning of lessons. For the sake of your own mental health, I would steer clear. Speaking to other former employees, all have said (myself included) public schools have been a much more fulfilling experience.

Pros

Competitive salary, benefits, and professional development.

Cons

If you read the most recent positive reviews for Classical, you'll see a pattern: high ratings, vague pros and cons, bare minimum word count. It has become evident that Classical has realized their Glassdoor presence probably does more harm than good, and is trying to drive up their ratings. If you compare the content and style of negative to positive reviews, it's almost like the positive examples were generated by bots. Dubious to say the least.
