Pros

I've been associated with the retail division of Clayton Homes for over 20 years and they are currently the most innovative company in the business of manufactured housing. There is no other company in this business I would rather work for.

Cons

In retail the hours and multifaceted aspects of the job can be demanding. The number of hats a manager wears seems endless as we essentially operate shallowly staffed "mom and pop" locations. There is no college reimbursement available for retail employees yet there is for corporate office employees. Also corporate office employees get specific holidays off while retail employees in the field do not. It would be nice to see mutual respect for retail employees to get something similar even if it is not the same days off.

Pros

The people you work with are great, some managers should not be managers. Just because someone can sell, it doesn't make them a leader or management material.

Cons

Salary too low. If you want to attract and retain quality sales people, you have to pay a professional salary. It's hard to support a family on this salary.

Pros

There were plenty of pros at one point. The greatest pro is Kevin Clayton. I was around when he took a less of a role, then a very active role and now less of a role. When he is active work is fun but no more. The best part of this place is the 401K.

Cons

Unappreciated in all facets. If you do not suck up to regional mgr, you get no where. In fact, Clayton is all about nepotism unless he doesn't benefit someone. Then they overlook it. They overlook everything. Keep accused people of sexual harrassment etc working just move them. They make their own rules hide this and that unless yiu are ear deep in the bosses rear sucking up. Benefits: 401k is good, medical is just so-so. They decrease the benefit and keep the cost the same just to make you think they are doing something good. Work: long hours. 1st boss great with a rotating shift, some late, some early and 1 day a week long. Last boss expected open to close all the time. Nearly 50 hrs a week for 24000 per yr. The commission plan is great if you are a home center that has traffic if not then you will lilucky to gross 35000 including base. Definitely not worth the headache. Upper Management: most Zone Vice Presidents great guys. There are a handful of Regional managers that are great guys. But there are a couple that aren't worth a can of air. Sarcasm here: love how you work your rears off and the brand new manager gets the credit and the pay for it as if he did the work when he was not around when all the work and sweat was occurring. This goes back to ear deep in bosses rear. I don't know what else to say except beware. There is a reason for the Federal investigation right now. It is not due to Buffett I don't think. Pure leeches here.
