Pros

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained” I recited to myself over and over again as I left a job I was very content at to pursue a position at Cloudera. Several years ago when I made the decision to join the Cloudera team I was excited about all the perks working for a hot Silicon Valley startup had to offer. Over the years I realized the real “perks” of working at Cloudera have a far greater impact on my life than a salary increase or the convenience of not having a commute. The biggest perk of working at Cloudera is the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the best leaders in technology. The leaders at the top truly care about their employees and the company. Cloudera’s CEO, Tom Reilly, CTO, Amr Awadallah, CSO, Mike Olson, CFO, Jim Frankola, VP of Customer Success, Sarah Sproehnle, VP of FCE, Paul Beduhn, SME leader Amy O’Connor, and VP of HR Britt Sellin lead by example when encouraging their employees to align with the company values of being open, trustworthy, team players who take initiative. Thank you, Cloudera for giving me the opportunity to take a risk and reap financial, personal, and career rewards year after year.

Cons

Cloudera provides many platforms (anonymous company surveys, 1:1s, etc) for employees to share concerns. The leadership team takes the feedback seriously and reacts accordingly.

Pros

Fantastic, positive culture. Opportunity to join a superstar, rapidly growing company. Great opportunities for advancement.

Cons

I honestly can't think of any, unless you don't want to move to any of their office locations. However, Cloudera does have many remote offices, and the company is steadily opening new offices throughout the US and worldwide.

Pros

Cloudera was a great firm under its founders, leaders, and team organization, and it was the optimal time to acquire Hortonworks, merge the two organizations, and stay ahead of the cloud disruption market by offering a true multi-cloud solution.

Cons

The Hortornworks staff have taken over, literally climbing over the Cloudera staff. Most Clouderans were hoodwinked into accepting other roles that were either demotions or roles that needed to be matched or where staff needed career aspirations or strong motivation. Luckily everyone was smart and secured second or even third sources of income while they pivoted away from the environment. Nobody wants to watch over their back every 2-3 months when we all came from a place where we had a minimum of 5, to 6, or 10 years of stability. Today they have lost significant market share, compared to Databricks. We used to call Databricks Snowbricks, but both Databricks and Snowflake eat the market alive. There are dozens upon dozens of major organizations that all use Databricks or Snowflake. Whenever I run into a Cloudera client, they are also customers of the other platforms, and/or migrating to them. Essentially CDP offers now what these two entities were already offering, and while that is not completely true, most of the necessity of the broader data ecosystem, data components, and services can be accounted for in a half dozen different ways in the cloud afforded by the flexibility that Cloud providers offer. The reality is that organizations do not need to put all of the eggs in one basket with Cloudera.

Cloudera Response

Thanks for the feedback and for sharing your experience. At Cloudera, we want to empower all employees to provide honest feedback that will help us grow as a company. We're sorry to hear that your experience did not go as expected. However I can assure you that we are 100% committed to integrity, equality and inclusion across all lines of business at every level. We are continually working to improve the employee experience at Cloudera, and this includes ensuring our people are able to constantly develop, and are aware of the options available to them for advancing their career. Cloudera are also increasing manager training and employee communications so people at all levels have a better understanding of the organization and strategy. We are doing everything we can to push the needle and this year being named ‘Gartner's customer choice for Hybrid Data Platform’ shows that our efforts are paying off. However, saying that we need to continue to be focused on innovation and continuous improvement. Listening to our employees is just as important as listening to our customers and we will certainly take this feedback into consideration as we move forward.
