Pros

Good work life balance. Generally friendly people. Solid initial pay, though don't expect any raises. Good benefits.

Cons

Became extremely political after prior leadership transitions. Flatness of the company structure completely dissipated. Management plays favorites. Very Machiavellian now - management will cut employees at a moments notice. Culture has totally shifted, though still some residual positivity from those still left prior to the leadership change. No internal opportunities for growth, no internal pay raises. People will take credit for your work to make themselves look better.

Pros

Leadership: Our CEO is truly one of a kind. Combining intelligence with curiosity and empathy, they've cultivated an inspiring and inclusive culture. GTM Strategy: The recent introduction of new Go-To-Market (GTM) leadership has been a game-changer. Their expertise in driving accountability and swift operations has significantly enhanced our focus on winning our ICP. Hiring Excellence: Cockroach maintains a high bar for hiring, incorporating detailed case prompts in the interview process. This ensures that only the best talents, who are both skilled and a good cultural fit, join our team. Product Impact: Our product stands out in the database market, offering unique solutions to real challenges faced by global 2k firms. It's incredibly rewarding to work on a product that makes a tangible difference for applications that matter.

Cons

Past Reduction in Force (RIF): October marked our first RIF, a decision long postponed, leading to unequal impacts across teams. While it was a tough call, it primarily affected lower performers, reflecting a necessary adjustment rather than a systemic issue. Benefit Adjustments: Over the years, some benefits have been scaled back. While initially generous to a fault, this recalibration was necessary to prevent abuse and ensure sustainability. Flex Fridays, for example, needed clearer boundaries to maintain productivity. Return to Office (RTO): With a current 50/50 split between remote and on-site employees, the company is gradually pivoting towards an RTO model. While this shift may not align with everyone's preferences, it's a strategic move considering the rare instances of remote-first companies successfully going public. Competition and Differentiation: Despite facing giants like AWS, Oracle, and Google, our value propositions and unique solutions enable us to hold our own in the market. It's a competitive edge that we're constantly investing in.

Pros

CockroachDB is a great product with a lot of market potential and good brand awareness.

Cons

If you want opportunities for professional growth and work/ life balance look elsewhere. In the last year, the company has made a shift away from employee well being and growth. There has also been a big shift away from DEI and bro culture has taken over, so if you're looking for a diverse, inclusive environment, this is not the place for you. Remote work is no longer valued, and the company has shifted its strategy back to being office first (with badge access being tracked). Poor leadership with a lot of management hires based on previous working relationships and not on qualifications, limiting internal promotion opportunities. The company laid off 15% of its workforce (under the guise of money savings) while simultaneously hiring aggressively. Attrition and additional layoffs should be anticipated.
