Pros

Great culture, variety of projects, allowed to take on as much responsibility as you want, open door policy with management, great facilities, open to new opportunities if you want to "champion" the idea, minimal corporate oversight, "work hard/play hard" environment, overtime effort compensated

Cons

overtime sometimes needed due to difficulty in filling mid-level to senior level technical positions but extra time is compensated, growth has lead to sometimes cramped facilities but expanded work space is being planned

Thanks for the great advice about maintaining the autonomy of our local offices. The strength of this model cannot be overstated and has been the drumbeat that Dave Coffman has been beating for 35 years. Corporate is supposed to support the success of the individual offices. The offices are the business. If we set them free to be creative and innovative, and then offer them support and backing to implement a new idea, invest in growth, and streamline their overhead efficiencies, we will continue to attract the best engineers and perform the most rewarding projects. As you suggested, we have an open door policy which assures that we have access to the best ideas. Thanks again for your input. - Dave Ruff, President

We take this advice very seriously. Recently I had the general managers meet for a summit. One of the objectives was to reaffirm clarity around our purpose for being in business. We answered the question "Why do we do that", and kept asking it until we narrowed in on our most fundamental motivation. It didn't surprise us, and it was rather confirming, that our ultimate purpose for being in business is to take care of people. It was agreed that there is a core motivation beyond profit and prestige that drives the engine of Coffman Engineers. It is people. Take care of people and the profit will take care of itself. Take care of the business to take care of people and take care of people to take care of the business. Thanks for your input. - Dave Ruff, President

Pros

Coffman is genuinely supportive of individual career development. This makes the company an attractive place for a successful and long term career.

Cons

The company's sustained rapid growth during the last few years has led to a loss in some of the culture that has traditionally made the company a great place to be.

The CEO, Chair of the Board, and myself meet regularly to discuss the state of our company. In this most recent meeting we spent a considerable amount of time discussing our culture. We are long term employees; 25 years, 30+ years, and 20 years respectively. So we grew up with this company and want to protect what drew us to the company all those years ago. It is true that as a company grows things do change, by virtue of size and practicality. So while we have to apply regimen to certain areas of our business for the sake of efficiency, we are convinced that we can retain the parts of our culture that make us unique and a enjoyable environment to work in. At the same time we are convinced that unless we are cautious and intentional (as you suggest), we will inadvertently compromise the very thing that interested us in the first place. Ultimately, we are going to need everyone's help with this. Please let us know if/how our culture is being affected. We need your feedback. - Dave Ruff, President
