Pros

The work we do is very diversified, which allows each employee to grow in a broad way. Specialization is also encouraged here, with the goal that each person would do the work that they enjoy and are good at. Employers are very accommodating of requests for time off, and encourage employees to have interests and responsibilities apart from work. The culture is great, it is a fun place to be but everyone is working hard as well.

Cons

the majority of my time is spent in the office, not too many opportunities to get outside at job sites.

I am confirming your comment to have interests and responsibilities outside of work and take time off (work/life balance). I have seen people bludgeon themselves with overtime for months and months on end. They say they can handle it, and maybe physically they can, but all the while if they were honest they would have to recognize that they were getting bitter about the situation. This is not healthy, helpful, or sustainable. Your manager should be looking out for you, but each person needs to know their threshold and speak up. Sounds like you have a good balance. Regarding construction site experience, we need to get you out there. You will definitely have more opportunities as you get experience, but early in your career job site experience can be invaluable. Make sure to mention this desire to your manager (at the very least during the annual Employee Development Plan meeting). Thanks for your comments. - Dave Ruff, President

Pros

Great work environment, great people. Plenty of opportunities for personal growth. Company is always on the look out for new markets and committed to finding great people. Opportunities to travel to other offices for larger projects and training.

Cons

Huge variety in work, difficult for some to switch between projects, I see the diversity on work as a huge perk!

Thanks for the comments. We do pride ourselves in the variety of work that we pursue. Earlier in my career at Coffman I went from designing a Snow Hauler for the South Pole Station, to designing a fish trap to catch endangered Bull Trout, to refurbishing a Carbon Anode Bake furnace. However, others in our company develop a depth of expertise with more focus (e.g. Laboratory Design, or Seismic Analysis, etc.). There are multiple paths inside of Coffman. I am glad you have landed where you can thrive. - Dave Ruff, President
