Colgate was once a best place to work

Pros

Top notch art health insurance benefits, decent work life balance (when working in the offices).

Cons

Too much hierarchical, slow pace decision-making process (or sometimes no decision), zero support you are going to get if you make a decision. Excessive savings driven mentality, it is all about money.

Good Company Questionable Employer

Pros

Good benefits, competitive salary, innovative company, heavy focus on brand recommendation. Large focus on shareholder return. Ethics and compliance always in the forefront.

Cons

Heavy focus on outsourcing certain business areas. If you are in HR, Marketing, Sales or Information Tecnology, look elsewhere for employment. Poor marketing strategies and insufficient funding. The last few years they are outsourcing external business units finance and customer service to Mexico. Global IT is primarily resourced through India and Mexico and local US employees have been displaced.

Hard work doesn't always pay off

Pros

The company as a whole is stable and in today's economy it's comforting to know they won't be going bankrupt any time soon. The benefits can't be beat. Medical, dental, retirement. tuition reimbursement.

Cons

The harder you work the harder you are expected to work by upper management. Even when you are stretched so thin you don't have time for even one more task, they pile it on knowing that somehow, some way the most dedicated people will get it done even if that means working when you get home until 2:00 AM. It seems the ones that barely get by are the ones that get the most support and those are the ones that are usually moved up to better positions within the company. If you are not one chosen to "Fast Track" and you are doing a good job at your current position that will be your only position. Ability is not a factor in choosing a candidate for an open position. Most of the time there is already a candidate identified prior to a position being posted but the company policy is to post an opening for 2 weeks before naming the candidate that is awarded the position. There was a time when Colgate would strive to be what they considered the "Best Place to Work" but I'm not sure what happened to that philosophy or from what pool of people they are surveying to determine if they are meeting that expectation.
