Pros

Campus, colleagues, decent pay, tuition reimbursement.

Cons

Run! Toxic work environment permeates Arts & Sciences . Incompetent, unprofessional managers allowed to bully employees. A huge lawsuit is on the horizon . Zero work life balance. Managers gossip about employees, lie, do not acknowledge the work/contribution of staff, tell staff to engage in illegal behavior. Senior leadership turns a blind eye.

Pros

Great benefits, and compensation meets industry standards.

Cons

Management and Human Resources utilize unethical practices to remove highly efficient staff from employment. Very high turn-over rate, no room for growth, speculation takes priority above factual evidence. Human Resources do not assist in resolving work related issues nor will they defend an employee against verifiably inaccurate and false statements made by an another employee. Be prepared for Human Resources to tell you "Don't believe everything you read" in regards to university policies that are supposed to protect you and your employment.

Administrative office in one of the schools

Pros

Work-life balance possible (very few instances of needing to work in the evening or on weekends). Genuine caring about students' well-being and success.

Cons

Columbia is an enormous organization, so your particular experience is very dependent on the department or office you're in, and especially the people who run it. Unfortunately, the office I worked in (the administration for one of the schools) was by far the worst place I have ever worked, and it was due to the school's leadership. The words micro-management, unilateral, and top-down come to mind. Everything, and I mean everything, had to be approved by the leadership. There was also a lack of accountability. Often, I saw menial tasks being assigned to intelligent, competent staff members, with a blatant disregard for proper roles and responsibilities, because incompetent staff members could not be trusted to do the work. I urge anyone considering a position in an administrative office to learn as much as you can about the work culture, environment, and general sense of happiness in that office before accepting an offer. Ignoring those red flags was my biggest mistake.
