Pros

Good educational benefits; decent work life balance for higher ed (depending on the department)

Cons

Pretty terrible HR office. Experienced discrimination there and the investigation was flubbed. Separately there was a pretty obvious glass ceiling for Black Americans.

Pros

Good flexibility when it comes to needing time off for appointments. Co-workers are mostly courteous.

Cons

They pay a lot of lip service to valuing their employees, but everything they actually do says otherwise. They do not value higher ed experience and hire people from the outside over people who have been there for years. No title changes or real pay raises in sight--mobility is horrible. Leadership is disingenuous.

Pros

Good union benefits; good work/life balance for union employees (officers vary depending on job demands & whether their manager respects boundaries); great colleagues; and lots of opportunities to learn new skills.

Cons

Leadership tends to stay for decades so there is not much opportunity for growth within; shift to running like a corporation; anti-union sentiment in leadership; toxic managers (micromanagement); pay (was solid before but they will not keep up with inflation, so many employees are living paycheck to paycheck); pay inequity for the same positions; low morale; leadership could use more diversity (trend of seeing white people promoted while BIPOC employees tend to leave for job advancement); sink or swim environment.
