Pros

Brand recognition in MO & KS No micro management Somewhat autonomous working conditions 150 years in business means stability

Cons

Pay structure is lower than most banks Banks are like casinos don't get involved with them unless you are an owner because the odds are always in their favor. High turnover Forwarding emails is not teaching, coaching, or leadership No strategy or focus for any retail department No tools to help you gain business Greedy Big Bank mentality: It has to be a sure thing / make us lots of money and no risk. We will waste time and money on getting legal department approval and waste more time and money on a D-level marketing department back to legal. Whoops we are out of money for the initiative. P.S. No one is reading your 10,000 word Advertisements/Brochures/Flyers. They are supposed to get people curious about a product or service; not be like an afternoon at the library. 80's and 90's technology with lots of band aid fixes No advice or coaching ever because management has no idea how to be successful doing the job

Pros

It is easy to get a job here, please see the cons section for more details.

Cons

Does a great deal of micromanagement. Your manager wants to be CC'ed on everything, all the workpapers need have a great deal of unnecessary detail like where did the supporting documentation came from, when, how, the purpose of the document, how does it relate to the audit objective, highlights, tickmark explanations etc. If you forgot a tickmark, tickmark explanation, or explanation was not detailed enough, all hell will brake lose. All the objectives in the audit are budgeted. If you are over budget even by an hour you get penalized for it. There is a review/evaluation at the end of every audit, to show how bad of job you have done. The review mainly points out your negative traits and never anything positive. Everybody is after the bonus (5-10%) so everybody blames each other. They expect you to know everything – all the bank databases (which there are a lot), all the business units, the audit objectives, people you’ll be working with, business unit polices and procedure and process etc. If you are unsure about something and you ask a question, you’ll get a bad review in your evaluation because you wasted your senior’s time (i.e. Evaluation will read something like: lack of understanding of the business unit) You never get any growth opportunities, when the time comes for a promotion or salary increase, they will evaluate you from all your audit evaluations (which only points out the negatives). Long story short, I was there for 2.5 years and I hated every moment. The salary was $56,000, 20% lower than what I make right now, doing 35% less work.

Commerce Bank Response

We are sorry to see you were unhappy in your employment with Commerce. Documentation and metrics are a part of any audit job, but micromanaging is not. Unfortunately, there are times when our managers must take extra care to work with employees to improve their performance and in some cases, there just isn’t a fit. Our audit department has higher than average engagement scores, so we are happy to report this is not often the case. We appreciate your feedback and we hope you have found a great fit with your new employer.

Pros

Standard bank as far as benefits. Ability to buy extra vacation. Nice art collection. Raises of about 1% each year.

Cons

“Blue Chip” items are supposed to improve the bank but what it comes down too is added responsibility on the already overworked employee. Specifically in commercial banking, where turnover has been much higher in recent years. The office has become increasingly male dominated and the top few are the ones that control everything, with no desire to give a damn about the rest of the employees.
