Typically you leave a situation like that with a sour taste. And while the lay-off left me feeling shocked, I'm actually quite grateful for the opportunity and the team I worked with at Cortex. They truly do have a set of values and vision that they want to achieve, and does a fantastic job of infusing that throughout the company and its culture.
It's a fun bunch and the C-Suite makes the best of a rapidly evolving work environment. Managing a remote workforce spread out across the country is never easy, but strong and capable leadership and management made it seem normal.
The best thing I can say about the company is they've earned my respect, and even in the lay-off process they did their best to treat me with respect as well. In leaving Cortex, I left sad about what I should have accomplished, but happy that I got to spend almost a year at the company.
Cons
Trying to run a start-up on a shoe-string budget in today's wild, roller-coaster ride in the Healthcare Service Provider industry is tough. I can't sugar coat it, while they do their best in the situation they're given, there's never enough resources, human and capital wise, to accomplish everything that needs to be done.
