      Pros

      Benefits (especially retirement), training (sometimes). Even if you are incompetent, you can get elected to a department head position, do nothing constructive and accumulate a nice retirement. If you are an elected, you don't have to follow the policies and procedures as outlined.

      Cons

      cronyism, nepotism, union environment, silos, if you don't work in safety department or one of the public works departments, or are an elected, you are just a second class citizen. Many people spend more time talking and networking than getting a job done.

      Pros

      I love my boss she's cool, she doesn't hover and values family

      Cons

      No room for growth at all. Dead end job. I even have my degree and they will hire from the outside versus hiring from within first. Its ok if you have no ambition or desire for more in your life I know several people who are office assistants for 8-15 years and are ok with that. But me I am looking for more and I have a great track record.
