Pros

If you want to work for a government entity, the County is a good starting point. Depending on the department, you will learn various clerical and accounting skills. They offer a benefits package, vacation and sick accruals, and the salary is decent. There is room for growth for many entry level positions.

Cons

Management and supervision is poor in many departments. I worked for three different departments over the eight years I worked there and leadership is extremely poor. Thorough job training is not always provided so you end up self-training. Many departments suffer from lack of morale due to poor management. Promotional opportunities are not merit based, and supervisors can hinder you from being promoted within a department. Health insurance premiums are high and increase every year. Retirement package for non-management employees is a mandatory 8% with no match from the county. County funds are mismanaged and not well spent, resulting in many cutbacks in other areas which always affect the employees (layoffs, no pay increases, increased employee paid premiums.

Pros

Great salary, benefits, retirement, and time off. Also many of the people in HR are amazing. Great place to work when good upper management is in place.

Cons

Executive level management has become awful in the last year. Good people have been released or forced to resign so they can bring in their lackies. No integrity. They need to change their mission from People First to Our People First.

Pros

Pay. Don't have to work as hard as private sector because of the unions.

Cons

Unionized, no incentive to work harder. Management for the most part would fail in the private sector but in-breeding is the norm. Won't hire someone really good for fear of looking bad. Mediocrity is the standard when a you are a unionized, public worker.
