Pros

You have a job and a salary. But even that didn't wasn't enough for the abuse you had to endure.

Cons

The manager at my publication was a psychopath who would disappear for hours and come back smelling of liquor. He also would harass his reporters publicly saying they were in-the-closet gay and routinely make completely inappropriate comments about people's love lives. He was threatened by underlings who didn't kiss his butt. There was a revolving door of reporters who were forced out or fired or left after having had enough. HR knew about the problem but did nothing. A few years ago the entire upper management team got fired, thankfully, but the new publisher. It took an outsider to realize the problems that had plagued the publication for more than a decade.

Pros

There are some very nice, intelligent people who have been there for years, and they're great to work with and learn from. Marquee publications for the industries they cover.

Cons

Management at the pub I worked for was very insular and tight-lipped; if someone quit, there would be no announcement until their very last day -- not sure of the logic behind that, making departures seem like shameful secrets. Clear favoritism not necessarily based on quality of work. Technology is woefully out of date, and not by a few years -- decades. Sales side meddles too much with editorial.

Pros

A lot of the people there are bright and very nice...

Cons

but the management sucks. It seems like every day someone resigns or is let go. Stay away.
