Pros

It's a steady as she goes company. Has good flagship products which have carried this private, family owned company for many decades. Fairly family-friendly policies. Can be a good company as a stepping stone.

Cons

Can find pockets of innovation but has an old-school media company feel overall. Made some pretty deep workforce cuts during the recession. Business units have autonomy, downside is a silo effect.

Range of publications, each a fiefdom with its own distinct personality - people have been able, from time to time, to go from one pub to another - especially over the past two years as the economic downturn extinguished a handful in the line-up...a small, paternalistic place...and, as trade rags, they often occupy niches which offer more job security than embattled newspapers/magazines these days. All in all, a good place to work

the drip-drip deterioration in medical benefits in recent years accelerated this year; pay increases have hardly kept pace with inflation
