Great Company - Not for Software

Pros

Overall, pretty great company culture & benefits. Pretty good work/life balance most of the time. I can't say a lot bad about this, most of the problems are in the IT sphere. Unlimited PTO, very much a "Time when you need it" policy, Crowe also provides staff with a large number of days off, in addition to the standard holidays, including the entire week of July 4, most of Thanksgiving week, & the entire week between Christmas Eve & New Years Day (inclusive of). In addition to this, there is also a 12-week paternity/maternity leave program, recently increased from 6 weeks. Pay has been pretty good - very generous with raises & bonuses at least between 2020-2023 Good place to build up a career. There are a lot of vertical opportunities here, however, this can be a double-edged sword in a lot of cases.

Cons

The way Crowe is structured as a consulting firm it could be better described as a company composed of multiple smaller companies, each with their own area of focus. Because of this, not all of the individual BUs/DUs/SDUs, as they're called, pull in the same direction or have the same needs. It should definitely be highlighted that Crowe is NOT a software company, however, a large chunk of their business has previously relied on software built in-house. The majority of the cons, from a developer's perspective, arise from this fact. Crowe has absolutely no idea what a good developer is or how to implement good DevOps practices here. Development is painful and slow, there are bottlenecks all over the place caused by inefficient processes, siloed groups manage different aspects of systems (security, cloud, etc.) which creates a huge intake monstrosity that slows everything down, bad developers are everywhere & good developers tend to leave after they've exhausted their patience trying to improve things. Crowe is picky about who gets in the door but then It's nearly impossible to fire underperforming employees. There have been developers here who verifiably do 0 work for weeks on end & even when this is brought up to management, it has no impact. If by some miracle an employee is placed on a PIP it will become the team's full time job for the next 4-6 months to babysit that employee & document every action, mistake, and communication until they can be let go & no longer burden the team. People are put in charge of software projects who have no previous experience running a software project at scale. Corners are cut everywhere, egos get in the way & override individuals who actually have the knowledge to get things done, timelines are unrealistic & practically delusional in their expectation - there's a lot of people in high places here who write checks they can't cash and then try to blame the employees for not living up to unrealistic expectations.

Pros

Salaries paid on time, good location at the city center, stable job.

Cons

Toxic environment, low salaries compared to the general market and other consulting companies. Overall, the people there are not professionals. The company stinks of nepotism and there are no opportunities for professional development.

Pros

- Unlimited time off, remote work - Nice lengthly mid and year-end company shut downs.

Cons

- Low billable hours impact you standing severely at firm, which is often out of your control. - Low bonuses (1% of base max) this past year - Work is often not related to your job scope or job titles, often leading to a mismatch of your skills vs. skills needed for client projects. - Leadership lacks compassion, empathy.
