Pros

Benefits are fair , not great, same with salaries. Bonuses are rare. Part of the Fairfax Group out of Canada which includes Odyssey Re in the US, which is the more successful of the two us subsidiaries.

Cons

The company likes to promote the fact that they have been around since the mid 1800's.That's hard to believe when you consider how little success they have had in recent years. You would think after 150 years they could finally figure out how to run an insurance company and make money, but they can't . Compare them to ACE and other companies that have been around for less than 30 years and see who has the larger surplus, better rating and better reputation in the industry. Constantly re-engineering themselves with a new CEO. Prior to the actuary they now have running it, the last management group could best be described as coming from Superman's Bizarro world. Results have been well below industry standards and a lot of speculation is that Prem Watsa (Fairfax Chairman) keeps them around to counter balance the successof their sister company in the US Odyssey Re, to keep their tax rate down. No real bonuses for years but now they are going to do a multi - million dollar building renovation at their HQ! That makes a lot of sense and the employees are overjoyed .

Pros

Individual co-workers were fine, the PTO is decent and being able to set (within reason) your own hours is nice - but all companies have these perks.

Cons

Upper management! Work Environment! Path to Advancement! IT SYSTEMS! General work environment. Take a job here if you are desperate, but don't expect any career advancement, help for upper management or any of instructions, past how to log on, on the IT systems. Upper management treats the workers like they are slaves. The IT systems are extremely outdated and no one seems to be able to tell you how to do various things. Finally, the use 27 different forms instead of one. One form to analyze and suggest a reserve, another to move the reserve, a third to notify different departments, yet another for trials, etc. the list goes on and on. Wasted so much time doing yet another form. Finally, upper management keeps passing out the Kool Aid of the ultimate big guy is Prem Watsa! As if that makes one bit of difference. He's not Jesus, he's not in the building helping you or even in the country for that matter.
