Pros

None worse experience. No excuse.

Cons

Worse employer. Do nothing for clients. No changing of behavior. Glorified inept baby sitters. It's a cult if your in the clique it's like high school. Pill popping oxy, weed smoking managers. Ridiculous they need to be closed down. Have had 30 years to fix the homeless issue and are exponentially making it worse. Getting 950 million dollars. No accountability. No giving life skills or basic rules of how to function in society. Delusional.

Thank you for your comments. We have a strict drug-free workplace policy for DESC staff. If violations of this policy are occuring, we expect the issue to be reported so it can be appropriately dealt with. Our agency has learned that change is more permanent when we give clients autonomy to choose when/how/if they utilize the services we provide. We know we cannot force people to change. There are many causes of homelessness, and DESC is just one of many agencies working to address the crisis. Thanks to DESC, over 1,600 people have permanent places to live and more than 6,000 people receive services each year - all this on a total budget of less than $100 million per year.

Pros

If you are interested in a career in the mental health field, you will learn more in 6 months as a residential counselor at DESC than you would in 2 years of college. The hourly pay is decent, and the medical and paid time off benefits are amazing.

Cons

There can be frightening situations when a person is under the influence of substances and/or having a mental health crisis, and sometimes there are not enough staff there to feel safe.
