Nepotism, Discrimination, Favoritism, Low Pay, and Poor Management—It's a Hot Mess There!
Pros
They were pretty good about letting you arrange your time so you could do family things during work-day hours and put time in over the weekend or on nights. They have on-site recreational facilities and they give you two hours a week of paid exercise time. I was not micromanaged.
Cons
Very seldom does a woman get placed in an upper-managerial position. Pay is extremely low; I doubled my salary when I left. Raises are very arbitrarily given and punitively withheld, and, like your job security, can be based on whether someone in the family or the family's "friends" like you or not. If you keep your head down you may last a while at the job. If you are family you are guaranteed employment for life. Don't get too attached to anyone that isn't a "safe" employee—they may be gone in the night. You have to be very careful who you talk to and who you trust because there are several people there that are embedded in the organization due to age old family circumstances. These people have a lot of clout and you would never guess it. For a technology company, this company has really old computers and operating systems. There is no real HR; it is the owner's wife. The company has a difficult time attracting talented people so people without reasonable skills are given jobs. For instance, many programmers do not have a computer programming background. Program management is nonexistent and a lot of spaghetti programming occurs. After five years of working for the company, I finally reported one of the sexual harassment issues I encountered and I was "let go" the next day because I "appeared unhappy with my job."
